Have you felt a little confused about all the different types of therapy modalities and have heard a lot about EMDR but are not sure exactly what it is? Do you have questions about it and just need straight answers? These are some of the most frequently asked questions from people curious about EMDR. Learn more about it and if its the right fit for you!
What is EMDR?
EMDR is a type of therapy that helps individuals reprocess distressing memories through the use of bilateral stimulation. For example, following a dot on the screen to help the brain reprocess the traumatic information.
How does EMDR work?
EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic information through overwhelming the memory and helping the brain re-encode information as less painful and helping the individual feel better.
What does EMDR treat?
EMDR helps people recover from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and can help issues such as anxiety, phobias and other trauma related conditions.
How long are EMDR sessions?
EMDR can range from 60 to 90 minutes but most insurance companies will only pay for 52-60 minutes. Which can be helpful because the eyes can get tired after extended amounts of bilateral movements.
How many sessions are needed?
EMDR sessions vary from person to person but it's not uncommon to have 10 or more sessions. Improvement also varies from person to person where some will experience relief after 1 session and some may take longer.
Is EMDR right for me?
EMDR can be helpful to those who have PTSD or traumatic memories that are negatively impacting your life. Symptoms commonly associated with trauma include sleep disturbances such as nightmares, flashbacks or flashbulb memories, intrusive thoughts, and/or increased anxiety.
However, EMDR is most beneficial to those who have already had some prior therapy and are familiar with identifying moments of overwhelm for reduced disruptions during sessions.
What does a session look like?
What happens in a session will depend on the stage you are in. There are 8 stages of the EMDR process. Generally, stages 1-3 are taking a history and building coping skills to help with reprocessing of traumatic information. Stages 4-6 are desensitization of traumatic memories this is where the bilateral stimulation will occur the most and stages 7-8 is future coping with trauma.
Is EMDR safe?
In EMDR we always prioritize safety and will teach coping skills to ensure if reprocessing is too much that there are safeguards in place. However, EMDR is not advised for people with certain medical conditions that can be exacerbated with repetitive eye movements. Clearance will be needed by a doctor if these conditions exist.
Can EMDR be done online?
YES! With advancements in technology audio, visual and tactile bilateral stimulation can be done online and in the comfort of your own home. However, we do recommend a laptop / full screen and headphones to get the full visual and audio experience.
Do I have a qualified Licensed EMDR therapist available?
YES! At Prado Counseling Services LCSW we are certified through the EMDRIA the Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing International Association. EMDRIA is the website that was created by the founders of EMDR.
